As many of you may have heard the Denim and Diamonds Auction was a huge success. Please thank Darci Winter, Shari Thomas, and Keri Walters for all of their help putting this auction together. The response to the event and generosity of our membership lead us to raising a gross total of $137,000. The Board of Directors has paid of a good chunk of debt with this money and will make some decisions at the August Board Meeting as to where the balance will be applied. The membership will be notified by mail as to exactly where all the money from the auction has been applied. Thanks again for making this inaugural event a success.
Some improvements have recently been made within the club that I hope you will enjoy. The pool heater is fixed as well as a new diving board. Lounge chairs at the pool will be re-strapped this month, and new nets have been put up on the lower tennis courts. Ryan has made a few improvements to some of our landscape beds on the golf course. Let me reassure everyone that all of these projects were made possible by special donations from members in the club.
Congratulations to our 2008 Ladies Club Champion Patti Basham. She put together two wonderful rounds of golf to take home the title. Also congratulations to Bill Schroeder for a remarkable win at this year’s Men’s Invitational. The event was a great showcase to our beautiful golf course (Thanks Ryan). A big thanks needs to be given to all of the committee members for making my job easier and the tournament a success again this year.
Once again thanks for all of the support, positive comments, and continue to promote Dodge City Country Club.

The dog days of summer are on us now; the heat and dry conditions are normal and hopefully will subside soon, although the last few years August and September have seemed to be the hottest months. But maybe things will change this year, Global warming anyone??? Hopefully everyone is enjoying the Dodge City Days, and having a great end to the summer.
I must say that the Men’s Invitational might have been one of the strangest few days I have seen in a long time in regards to weather. The Friday of the practice round was very hot with wind blowing out of the south; Saturday, day one of the tourney, 60’s-80’s, wind howling out of the north; then on Sunday the weather could not have been written up any better, low 90’s with a light breeze. Overall I think the tournament was a huge success, as with many other great tournaments we have held this year. Looking forward to August, we have some more great tournaments coming up in the next few weeks.
With the summer months coming to an end, this is usually the time of year when I start praying for fall to come with rain and cooler temps. We have started to see the signs of dry and hot conditions on the course; the guys have been out watering and trying to keep everything in a condition, so that if we would ever get a rain, we will be right back in business. |
Along with everything else, historically this is the time of the year we start seeing diseases popping out on greens, fairways and tees. We have had to raise the heights already to get us through until aerification time.
Speaking of aerification time, my plan on greens is to go out on September 8th and 9th, with fairways and tees coming behind them.
You might have seen some of the improvements we have made to areas on the course; one that I would like to point out is the flowerbed on #1 tee box. I would like to thank Rick and Eileen Jewell for their donation for a pallet of rock to border the bed. Overall I was extremely happy with the overall effect that the bed brings to the course. We will always be willing to improve areas around the club and the course; if you have an area you would like to help out on, please let me know.
As always if you see the turf team, please let them know how much they bring to the course day in and day out. We will be losing a few with college starting, so that means I have to start working again I guess!! That was a joke!
We’ll see ya out and about,

A few simple practices to keep the greens, tees, and fairways in good shape throughout the year.
1. Repair all ball marks properly: with the grass slowing down, the healing process of any marks that have either been ignored or improperly fixed will continue to be there for a long time. Try not to lift the turf while fixing the marks, the best way is to go from all four sides and pull back into the mark and tamp down with the putter head.
2. Please review the attached for a sample
How to Correctly Repair a Ball Mark on a Green
Please study the diagram below on how to correctly repair your ball marks. A correctly repaired ball mark will regenerate itself in a couple of days. An un-repaired ball mark takes weeks to heal.
CORRECT
1. Discard the loose piece of turf taken out by the ball.
2. Insert the repair tool just outside the back of the ball mark.
3. Pull the turf toward the center of the hole.
4. Gently pat down the repaired undamaged turf over the ball mark, providing almost instant recovery.
|
INCORRECT
1. Do not replace the loose piece of turf taken out by the ball. It will die and delay the healing process.
2. Do not pry up the center of the depression with the repair tool as it exposes the soil, damages the root system, and will delay the healing process.
3. Do not insert the repair tool and twist it. This will also damage the root system and will break away any loose turf. This will also delay the healing process.
Show that you care about your courses. Repair your ball mark and one other. Even a chip shot to the green can produce a ball mark. Take pride in your course.
1.Do not use your putter head to retrieve your ball out of the cup, this damages the edge and may alter a putt for the next golfer.
2. Continue to sand all divots on fairways and tees, or if they are deep enough replace the sod and tamp down.
3. Continue to utilize the Par 3 Divot boxes, for lack of staff, we are unable to get around and topdress on a regular basis.
4. The general rule is to keep all cart traffic away from the green about 30 feet, this also helps alleviate the daily compaction our equipment puts on the area.
5. Practice is to always use different tracks, either by walking or driving, the continuous wear and tear on the same area will result in bare, hard ground.
Thank You for caring for the course! If for any reason you might have a question on the right way to do something, please ask myself or the Pro Shop anytime!!

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Members:
WHAT AN EVENT! If you haven’t heard, the “Denim and Diamonds” benefit auction was a huge success. The Board has a huge debt (pardon the pun) of gratitude to Darci Winter and Shari Thomas for staging such a wonderful evening for everyone. When I thanked them for their efforts, they were quick to point out that they had a tremendous amount of help and that they really appreciated the donors, volunteers, and bidders for all of their assistance. Thank you again, everyone!
The Board has already used the initial proceeds to pay off our two operating loans. The remaining proceeds are being collected and we have established a new finance committee within the Board to analyze our one remaining loan and develop a long-term financial strategy for the club. We will keep you informed of our progress and how we apply the balance of the funds.
The Men’s 54th Invitational Golf Tournament was held the weekend prior to the auction and though our total number of players was down slightly, the golf was not. The tournament committee pulled off another great event that showcases our golf course and club. The number one compliment I heard was how much the visitors enjoy our members and the tournament. Ryan’s golf course is a given. I’m curious though, how can there be that many players better than I am? The traveling trophy is safe at home…
You may see a few improvement projects going on around the grounds and golf course. Once again, generous donations from some members and the Men’s Invitational Committee have been provided and Ryan is taking advantage of his summer crew to complete them before this fall.
Enjoy your remaining summer!
Doug Moore, President

Chef Notes
Hello Members,
July started out very slow, but picked up towards the middle of the month. I want to personally thank everyone that helped out with the auction. The auction was a huge success, from attendance to food. Everyone had such a good time we all appreciate all the effort everybody made. Men’s Invitational went very well; we had a great turnout for it. Coming up in August we have a couple more tournaments then it starts to slow down a little. We have the Roundup and the His and Hers tournament.
Since the sushi was such a great success for the auction, I’m going to run it the weekend of August 22-23 as an appetizer special. There will be a limited amount each night so get here early. |
I will know what kind of sushi closer to the date, there will definitely be California rolls. I want to remind everyone that on Thursday nights on the family buffet we now have kids corner, with kid friendly items. We are looking to do a few changes to menu and replace some the items that are not selling, and Snickers ice cream pie is back. We are looking at dates in September to do a seafood buffet again. We will keep you posted on the date.
As summer is starting to pass us by, remember during hot times whether you are playing golf, working in the yard or just outside, keep yourself hydrated. Let’s make August a great month.
